Link in Boar - Wildlife Corridor Design
Animal-friendly design | Lion Rock Tunnel Road, Hung Mui Kuk Road, Hong Kong
Problems
In Hong Kong, wild boars are frequently seen walking along streets, which has become a serious social issue concerning both humans and wildlife. Rapid urban development has created an unfriendly living environment for boars, forcing many to venture downhill in search of food.
As a result, they are often injured by vehicles or harmed by poorly designed barriers. To address this,
strategies are needed to create safe separation between humans and boars while ensuring a fair and livable environment for both.
Design Corridors for Boars: Re-establish ecological connections between mountains. Fruit trees and other boar-friendly plant species will be introduced, along with rivers, grass, and mud to encourage boars to use these corridors.
Barriers: Incorporation of pavilions and drip-tip irrigated railings that serve as both functional and
aesthetic design elements.
Road Signage: Special signs will be installed to remind drivers to slow down, creating a safer and
more peaceful coexistence with boars.
